Dr Mariana Sheales is a Canberra-based ophthalmologist with specialist expertise in glaucoma surgery, cataract surgery, and comprehensive ophthalmology. She provides both private and public specialist eye care to patients across the ACT and surrounding region.

Dr Sheales completed her specialist ophthalmology training through the highly regarded Sydney Eye Hospital network — one of Australia’s most respected ophthalmology training programmes. She subsequently pursued advanced super-specialty fellowship training in Glaucoma at the world-renowned Oxford University Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom.

Dr Sheales completed her glaucoma super-specialty fellowship at the Oxford University Eye Hospital — one of the world's leading centres for glaucoma research and treatment — bringing internationally recognised expertise back to Canberra.

Dr Sheales was born and raised in Canberra, and returned home following her advanced fellowship training to bring subspecialist glaucoma care to ACT patients who previously had to travel interstate for this level of expertise. She holds a consultant appointment at Canberra Hospital, where she provides both regular specialist care and emergency on-call ophthalmology services.

 

Dr Sheales is committed to a highly patient-centred approach, working collaboratively with referring optometrists and GPs to deliver seamless, evidence-based care. She remains current in the latest clinical advances by regularly attending national and international conferences and scientific meetings. She has published research in several international peer-reviewed ophthalmology journals and has presented at conferences both within Australia and overseas.

 

Outside of medicine, Dr Sheales enjoys cooking and travel planning with her family — pursuits that reflect the same care and attention she brings to her patients.
